Consultation for Licensed Practitioners

About…

I offer consultation for licensed mental health practitioners facing individual client/patient issues or clinical uncertainty. As a seasoned psychologist and clinical leader, I work to understand the clinical context in order to offer balanced perspectives and clinical recommendations that align with ethical best practice. I understand that each clinical scenario is unique and that clinicians seek consultation based on a commitment to proving excellent care. Interpersonally, I am validating and compassionate while offering direct and actionable recommendations.

What is Consultation?

In day-to-day practice, all clinicians encounter new clinical issues that challenge confidence and increase uncertainty. In order to offer the best care possible, seeking consultation is commonly considered a key step that supports ethical and thoughtful clinical decision making. Consultation offers an opportunity for licensed providers to review clinical issues with a peer and consider other clinical perspectives, practices, and recommendations to optimize thoughtful clinical decision making.

Consultation vs. Supervision

  • Consultation is not supervision and differs in several key ways. Supervision is for pre-licensed providers working toward licensure. Supervisors are ultimately responsible for supervisee work. Consultation is for licensed providers to consider other clinical perspectives from a peer in order to optimize their own clinical decision making. In consultation, the consultee retains full responsibility for their own clinical decision making.

When is consultation Needed?

Here are some common use cases for consultation:

  • Navigating uncertainty and novel clinical situations.

  • Managing increased risk.

  • Building new mental health or wellness protocols.

  • Process or clinical improvement.

  • Newly licensed providers building confidence.
